Winter break perfect time for students to prepare for video contest: Ask a Librarian sponsors video contest for high schoolers

TAMPA, Fla. (December 15, 2009) — Wondering what to do with your aspiring young director over the winter break? Tell your high school students about The Third Annual Director’s Chair, a contest in which Florida students submit commercials to promote Ask a Librarian.  Ask a Librarian is a free online service that allows the public to chat with a librarian for help with homework or general questions

Floridians in ninth through 12th grade are invited to submit a 30-second video promoting Ask a Librarian by January 24, 2010, for the chance to win a digital video camera, a digital camera or a MP3 player.

“We hope students will be using their holiday vacations to put the finishing touches on their entries,” said Diana Silveira, virtual reference manager of Ask a Librarian. “We know teens are incredibly creative, especially after seeing past entries, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with this year.”

"Mrs. Kate" Carpenter, now booking for Summer 2010

Hello librarians,  As you begin to make plans for your summer 2010 FLYP shows, please consider me as a performer.  Here's a quote from Sherry Durham, Youth Librarian at Central Ridge Library in Beverly Hills, FL:

"The children were entirely caught up in your high-energy, original and educational presentation.  The great deal of well-planned audience participation could have been one of the main reasons that the students got so much out of the experience.  We all loved the bi-lingual aspects of the show, and your very humorous songs were outstanding."

The only weeks I will be scheduling performances this summer are:  June 14, June 21, and June 28.

Web 2.0 and Library Services for Young Adults: An Introduction for Librarians

Web 2.0 and Library Services for Young Adults: An Introduction for Librarians

The IFLA Libraries for Children and Young Adults Section has recently released a 78-page document that provides an introduction for librarians who are new to Web 2.0 and are interested in using publicly accessible social media tools to serve young adults.

According to the introduction in Web 2.0 and Library Services for Young Adults, the document’s aim is for “the practicing librarian to understand and ultimately decide for yourself what is the best approach in using social media as part of your Young Adult service.  This document does not dictate the best way to attract teens to your library (there is none!).”

The Web 2.0 tools covered include blogs, chat, Facebook, Creative Commons, Flickr, Google Docs, podcasting, RSS, social bookmarking, Twitter, and more.  Each section includes:

  • A brief overview of the Web 2.0 tool/services
  • A list of services (if there is more than one service)
  • Tips and considerations (if any) when choosing to use the service
  • Examples of how libraries have used those services themselves and/ or suggestions on how to use them in the context of library services to young adults

Make a Splash with a Puppet Show - Summer Reading 2010

Hello, Florida librarians!

Curious Moon Puppets' shadow puppet production of Fish 'n' Ships will really make a splash at your library this summer. More information can be found here:  http://www.curiousmoon.com/Shows.asp?ID=9

A brief description follows:

No one has ever been able to solve the mystery of what is haunting the old, sunken pirate ship. And none of the other fish in school believes that amateur detective Fry can solve the mystery either. With encouragement from the audience, and armed with his Deepwater Detective badge and Ocean Floor Trail Guide, Fry sets out on a journey across the ocean to find the ship and what is haunting it.

This shadow puppet show is presented using an overhead projector and includes water effects, scrolling scenery, shadow puppet tricks of the trade, and over 20 colorful puppets. More than just a puppet show, "Fish ’n’ Ships" is a sing along extravaganza of old favorites and some new songs that everyone will enjoy learning.
