Information Literacy Education: A National Overview - free webcast

The State Library and Archives of Florida invites all Florida library staff, volunteers, and other interested people to participate in the 2010 College of DuPage Library Learning Network Series: Library Futures: Staying Ahead of the Curve: An Electronic Forum of Ideas, Issues, Information and Opportunities for Librarians.

The College of DuPage Library Learning Network webcasts are great ways to practice important skills and knowledge in the library field and meet or network with library staff in your area.  These programs are available free of charge to all Floridians, through a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Florida Department of State, State Library and Archives of Florida.

Information Literacy Education: A National Overview

Friday, March 12, 2010, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern

When President Barack Obama declared October 2009 as National Information Literacy Awareness Month, Information Literacy received national attention.  The declaration stated: “In addition to the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic, it is equally important that our students are given the tools required to take advantage of the information available to them.”  He asked “people of the United States to recognize the important role that information plays in our daily lives, and appreciate the need for a greater understanding of its impact.”

Duck Duck Dewey Game

Upstart has a cute game to teach library skills called "Duck, Duck, Dewey"

http://www.highsmith.com/upstartbooks/Duck-Duck-Dewey174-Game-c_29235972/

It comes with little plastic ducks dressed up to represent the ten dewey classifications and a booklet with ideas of how to use the ducks (ideas like Scavenger Hunts). Great tie-in for "Make a Splash-Read!".

About the Presenter

Anne Neidinger is a Children’s Librarian at the Lone Star College-Tomball Community Library.  She holds a Master’s in Library and Information Science with a Youth Certification from the University of North Texas.  She has presented at several Texas Library Association conferences and co-authored “Igniting a Children’s Summer Reading Program on a Piggy-Bank Budget” in the Texas Library Journal (2006).  Anne also co-wrote the Elementary Programs chapter of the 2009 Texas Reading Club manual.  At her library, she has coordinated many after-school programs and enjoys seeing her school-age customers return again and again to the library.

Banks Helfrich - one of my favorite children's performers

Our library was looking for the perfect children's performer to finish off our line up of summer fun.  I was so thrilled to be able to book Banks Helfrich that I just had to write and let the rest of you know how much I like his shows.  Since we have very large crowds for our summer shows, we hired Jiggleman.  His delightfully zany physical humor results in a room full of giggling kids and happy parents.  If I had the funds, I would also hire him to present his new show, Math-u the Counting Cowboy, for younger children ages 2 - 7.  Here's his website --  http://www.whoisbankshelfrich.com/Banks_Helfrich.html if you'd like to learn more about what this talented performer could do at your library.

FREE RESOURCE: Make A Splash

Hi everyone,

I know many of you are starting to plan your  summer reading programs for children, and Billy Gorilly wants to help you get a head start. This years theme for many of the libraries is "Make A Splash — Read ". So Billy Gorilly decided to write a song called, what else?, you guessed it "Make A Splash"

Billy Gorilly loves the library and all it has to offer. He wants to help encourage children to visit their library and to learn and enjoy reading.

As a way of giving back to the community and help promote going to the library, Billy created a special 60 second promotional version of his song "Make A Splash". You can link to, download, or just listen to the song. You can also use the song in your promotional videos or audio ads. It's free for you to use. We just ask that you don't sell it. It's intended for everyone to use for free.

Please feel free to take a listen, and use this free promotional resource click here

We hope you enjoy!

Sincerely,

Tamara
