Katie Adams' Make Believe Theater

Hi Everybody,

The new show flyers for the Make Believe Theater FLYP summer shows 2012, are hot off the presses.

Here are descriptions of the shows:

Star Stories; Greek Myths   A Shadow Puppet Show
Look up! The night sky is full of constellations; star stories from the ancient Greeks. Katie Adams performs these myths with colorful shadow puppets, storytelling and audience participation. Stories include Perseus and Pegasus, Pandora’s Box, Baucis and Philemon, and Persephone. Dream big! See these amazing Greek myth stories with something to inspire everyone. 45 minutes.

“This was the best show I have seen all summer.”  Seminole County Library Patron
“I want to see all your shows because you have the best puppet shows I have ever seen!”  3rd grader

Here is the storytelling show I am offering. You may want to choose this option if you have a room that can't get semi-dark for the shadow puppets. I can also shorten this show to 30 minutes for a toddler / pre-school only audience.

Moon Stories
Dream Big! The night time is dream-time when folk tales about the moon come to life. Katie’s sparkling, animated style includes mime and audience participation, combined with a variety of rhythm instruments, and a beautiful jungle backdrop. The stories in this popular show are Anansi and his Six Sons, from Africa, Coyote and the Laughing Butterflies, from the southwest United States, Papagayo, from the Amazon rainforest, and more. 45 minutes.

"Once again, your storytelling skills amazed the children! The kids, parents, camp leaders and librarians all enjoyed the show very much. The children especially enjoyed participating with special movements and sounds."
Toni Hopper, Youth Services, Elsie Quirk Library, Sarasota

“When you tell Make Believe stories they are cool - and funny!”  4th grader

Teaming Up with Teens @ Your Library

Free Webinar

Tuesday, October 25, 2011, from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. EDT

Register here

Note: If this time doesn’t fit your schedule, you can find this and other programs in the WebJunction archive at http://bit.ly/WebJunctionArchive.

What is the absolute best avenue to getting teens involved and engaged at your school or public library? How can you encourage them to be peer reader advisors and library advocates in the community? Ultimately, if you want to encourage your teens to become lifelong readers, learners, and library users/supporters—and possibly even choose library work for their future career path—there is no better way to go than offering opportunities for active and involved teen library participation. In this webinar, you will explore ways teens can take part in your library, such as advisory groups, volunteering, short-term projects that use teen's special skills, and partnering with adults. You’ll also get tips on planning, organizing, conducting, and evaluating teen participation. When you team up with teens at your library, it's win-win! WebJunction is pleased to host this webinar in collaboration with the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA).

YALSA and Nickelodeon looking for youth working with early literacy

Nickelodeon is currently looking for young people between the ages of 13 and 19 who are working to promote early literacy, helping to educate and empower all young people to reach their full potential through various reading initiatives.

We are profiling very few teens so the ones that we select need to be truly amazing and inspiring – perhaps they’ve started their own organization or mentoring program, spearheaded their own campaigns or made a huge impact in their communities and/or in the lives of others.

If you know of any young people who fit this description, please send Veronica Friedman their names, ages, a short bio describing what they’ve done and who they are and if possible, contact information (preferably for a parent so that she can ask permission/get the teen’s phone number from them, if they are minors).

Best,

Veronica Friedman
