Where: Online

Duration: Thirty Minutes

Embracing an attitude of discovery is one of the keys to 'keeping up' with technology and kids. You might not know the most popular virtual world at the moment or what kids are really doing when they get online. Through this webinar you will learn tips to get started discovering what is online for kids, and learn what other libraries are doing to keep kids safe and information literate through technology. Then you'll be on the road to helping guide them through their lifelong journey.

We'll highlight best practices for libraries working with children and technology. Special guest Kelly Czarnecki is a Technology Education Librarian at PLCM's ImaginOn, a public library that is also a partnership with the Children's Theatre of Charlotte. She received Library Journal's Mover and Shaker award in 2007 for working with youth and technology. She writes a monthly column called the Gaming Life for School Library Journal. Kelly enjoys trying new things and making those 'aha!' moments happen with others when new things are discovered. ImaginOn's mission is to "bring stories to life through extraordinary experiences that challenge, inspire and excite young minds."

Teen Services Boot Camp: For Newly Enlisted Librarians - Workshop at NEFLIN

If you’ve found yourself suddenly in charge of teen services, then Teen Services Boot Camp is for you.

This class is envisioned for new teen librarians, those who have been forced into the position or who are uncomfortable with their role. Many of us in libraries were put in charge of teens simply because someone had to do it. Also, many children’s librarians are given the teen responsibilities simply because “teens are the same as kids.” As you can imagine, that leaves a lot of teen librarians as ill prepared for taking on these responsibilities.

Ear Buds Anyone?

Couple of years ago we recieved ear buds to give away to children and teens. I wanted to get the same ones this summer. I found out that the minimum order is for 10,000 pieces. the price break is 56 cents a piece.

It come to 5600 dollars for 10,000 pieces.

I am told that if we get more, the price will fall.

I am willing to work with anyone out there who is interested in getting ear buds for the summer - Time is of the essence.. We have to order by end of Feb to get them for June - unless earth quake or monsoon..flood.

Giving Tree Music

One of our favorite performers at the Dunedin Library is Steve Turner of Giving Tree Music.  He facilitates drum circles that are so much fun!  Steve has over 100 drums that he brings to your location.   We've had him at our reading festival and summer programming.  Both times we had great crowds of all ages who loved it!  He travels across the state and out-of-state.  His contact info is:

fl-lib list re-creation

Colleagues:

Recently, the server that supports the State Library and Archives’ e-mail distribution lists crashed.  We need to recreate and rebuild the various library lists that are used for announcements and messages to the library community.

We need your assistance to rebuild the subscriber list for the fl-lib listserv.  We were unable to recreate the subscriber list to fl-lib, and as a result, we need all of you to re-subscribe to fl-lib.

The fl-lib listserv is a service provided by the State Library and Archives of Florida.  It is devoted to messages and discussions relating to the library community in Florida.  Participation in the list is open to anyone, anywhere.  Membership is not required.

This list is used to post announcements from the State Library and Archives, funding opportunities for libraries, e-rate information, questions from library staff on services and programs, etc.  It is not designed for vendors to promote their products.

Fl-lib is not a moderated list; however, you must subscribe to the list to post messages.

Why focus on young children?

The National Institute for Literacy recently released a 260 page report describing and summarizing research on early learning and literacy.  The following are some highlights:
