Directory of Performers for Library Programs

Performers' Showcase 2010 Listing of Florida Performers and Entertainers is now available on the Florida Library Association website at

http://www.flalib.org/conference_2010/performers_entertainers_list.pdf

The Directory includes a description of performers' offerings, as well as contact and price information.

The Directory was compiled as a convenience for those attending the first-ever Performers' Showcase at the 2010 FLA annual conference, but a listing doesn't constitute a recommendation.

Kids Bookmaking: NEFLIN workshops in Orange Park and Gainesville

KIDS BOOKMAKING – two dates and locations

This workshop will cover everything you need to know to make books with children and young adults. You’ll make nine different small book forms, including binding the handouts into a book.  Learn to promote literacy for kids or teens by encouraging them to make, write or i

llustrate their own books.  Fun projects for using the books, developed by classroom teachers will be suggested.  The emphasis will be on making books with inexpensive tools and fun, interesting, and recycled materials. You’ll go home with:

  • Japanese binding
  • Glue-free quick books
  • French fold books
  • ‘Burrito’ books
  • Accordion books
  • Flag books
  • Caterpillar books
  • Other forms of sculptural books

Bring scissors and a one-hole punch.

Button Castanets

If you want to make button castanets (CSLP manual page 121) that were either demonstrated or on display at the FLYP workshops, you can make them really bright by ordering 94 big buttons for $9.99 from Oriental Trading. The item number is DE-57/8500. The big buttons would work very well made with pipe cleaners rather than glue as in the CSLP manual instructions. The kids would not have to wait until the glue dries and if you pulled the pipe cleaner up on top, you could twist it to make a finger holder just like real castanets have. Another way to make castanets is to use fingers from old gloves and glue the buttons on. If anyone knows of other ways, please post a comment.
