Broward County Library Announces Free Calls to Haiti at Three Broward County Libraries

BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Broward County Libraries Division, in partnership with AT&T and Broward County Enterprise Technology Services, is now offering customers free Internet and telephone access to Haiti as well as to agencies currently assisting in the earthquake-relief efforts. This program is available until March 31.

Additional computers and data and phone lines have been installed at North Lauderdale Saraniero Library (6901 Kimberly Blvd., North Lauderdale, 954-968-3840); Pompano Beach Branch (1213 E. Atlantic Blvd., Pompano Beach, 954-786-2181); and Tamarac Branch (8701 W. Commercial Blvd., Tamarac, 954-720-2282). Study rooms at these three locations have been converted into information access centers.

During this program, customers can place free, 10-minute phone calls to Haiti at the three libraries. Toll-free 800-number service is also provided at no charge, as are Internet connections. Demand for this program is expected to be high. AT&T is reporting that, despite the devastation to Haiti’s infrastructure, 30 to 40 percent of the phone calls are getting through.

Additionally, customers can use BCL public computers at all library locations to access helpful Internet sites, including the U.S. State Department (state.gov), Haiti.911.com, and other earthquake-relief sites. Free wireless WI-FI (on customer-provided equipment) is also available at BCL locations countywide. Access to the BCL public computers and WI-FI is a constant service available at all BCL library locations during open hours.

Winter break perfect time for students to prepare for video contest: Ask a Librarian sponsors video contest for high schoolers

TAMPA, Fla. (December 15, 2009) — Wondering what to do with your aspiring young director over the winter break? Tell your high school students about The Third Annual Director’s Chair, a contest in which Florida students submit commercials to promote Ask a Librarian.  Ask a Librarian is a free online service that allows the public to chat with a librarian for help with homework or general questions

Floridians in ninth through 12th grade are invited to submit a 30-second video promoting Ask a Librarian by January 24, 2010, for the chance to win a digital video camera, a digital camera or a MP3 player.

“We hope students will be using their holiday vacations to put the finishing touches on their entries,” said Diana Silveira, virtual reference manager of Ask a Librarian. “We know teens are incredibly creative, especially after seeing past entries, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with this year.”

The Boys & Girls Club Day for Kids

The Boys & Girls Club Day for Kids celebration is on September 12, 2009.  BGC Day for Kids is a day set aside each year to celebrate America's children through the gift of meaningful time with a positive adult.  The mission of the Day is about galvanizing national attention on the importance of spending meaningful time with children, something libraries do so well all year long.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America is interested in working with public libraries to participate in this celebration by distributing their Making Memories Family Activity Calendar.  In addition, libraries are encouraged to incorporate programming around BGC Day for Kids.

For programming ideas and the downloadable Making Memories Family Activity Calendar, check the Boys and Girls Clubs Web site at http://www.dayforkids.org/

Free Video for basic training to read aloud to children

Last year staff from Wichita Public Library partnered with Books for Life, a local organization dedicated to providing books and libraries for communities in underdeveloped countries, to create a training video that they could give to communities when they helped install a library.  The purpose of the video was to provide basic training for anyone who is reading aloud to children.  This video is free and is available on the web.  If you are training new staff or volunteers, this is a great way to get them started.  Please take a moment to look at the video here:

Feel free to pass this along to child care providers, teachers and parents.

Free techie help

Following is information about the Gates Foundation's MaintainIT Project:

The MaintainIT Project is a three-year project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We gather stories from public libraries on how they support public computers and publish their tips and techniques in Cookbooks and articles, available for FREE on the project web site. The Project works with libraries throughout the U.S. and Canada, sharing stories from the field so librarians can learn from each other.

MaintainIT is a project of TechSoup, (www.techsoup.org) a nonprofit with extensive experience helping other nonprofits use technology effectively. TechSoup works closely with community technology centers (CTCs) that offer access to public computers and have many of the same issues as public libraries. Techsoup Stock (www.techsoup.org/stock) has distributed over 2.5 million donated and discounted products to nonprofits and public libraries, freeing more than $600 million dollars for other uses.
