  • The CSLP manual for 2012 is here! - Posted Monday, December 12, 2011

Here's a photo of how I prepare CSLP manuals before personally delivering one to each of our 15 public libraries.  The Document Services Dept. here in Lake County Govt. has gently used empty notebook binders for employees to use.  I unwrap each manual and place it into a binder, place the dividers in to mark chapters and even use the cardboard which comes in the package to help divide different manuals.  This year I'lll be asking each manual recipient to sign a form for me indicating they've received the manual and telling me which sections of the manual their library will be using.  I'm doing this because 1) these manuals cost the State Library precious funds, 2) they're chock full of good ideas which can be used all year round (starting now, even), and 3) I want to remove as many barriers as possible to a librarian actually opening up the manual and referring to it for programming help.

  • Brainstorming ideas for 2012 summer theme - Posted Wednesday, September 14, 2011

I can hardly wait to see the 2012 CSLP manuals which should be in my hot little hands by early October.  Here's a list of ideas Lake County's youth staff came up with during a brief brainstorming session on the dreaming/night time themes Dream Big - Read (children) Own the Night (teens) and Between the Covers (adults).

  • Performers Showcase for 2012 FLA Conference - Posted Wednesday, June 8, 2011

    Hi,

My name is Linda Goff and I'm the Youth Services Coordinator for the 15 public libraries in Lake County Library System, which is in the center of the state not too far from Orlando. I'm on the Performers Showcase subcommitte (part of the FLA Conference Planning Committee).  The 3rd annual Performers Showcase is set to take place at the next FLA conference on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at the Wyndham Orlando Resort.

The purpose of the Performers Showcase is give librarians a chance to see quality performers in action.  This is an opportunity to get a “taste” of what a program may look like in their library before deciding to hire them. Performers stay after their short presentation to meet with librarians one-on-one.

So what kind of help do I need from you?  Please email me contact information for good performers who charge less than $500 per show.  The main focus is on performers for elementary school aged kids, but feel free to suggest other types of performers, too.

  • YouTube has CSLP related videos - Posted Monday, April 25, 2011

Here are just a few links to the cool YouTube videos you can view and use to supplement the CSLP's PSA DVD which most Florida libraries received from Patricia Romig at the State Library.

http://www.youtube.com/user/hangonhenry#p/a/u/0/z9uTZbreHVw for Steve Blunt's terrific song One World, Many Stories

http://www.youtube.com/user/hangonhenry#p/a/f/2/Zusw4jKDMes for Steve Blunt's funny song based on the ABC picture book Summer Stinks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EYyqODRKKs for a silly game from the Netherlands called Oleke Boleke which starts at 1:35

http://www.youtube.com/user/UWBSCMS#p/a/u/2/WeeR3bzBWOU for learning to speak some German but there are videos for several other languages, too

I'll be searching YouTube using the term "Collaborative Summer Library Program" for other SRP videos, too.

  • Banks Helfrich - one of my favorite children's performers - Posted Friday, February 5, 2010

Our library was looking for the perfect children's performer to finish off our line up of summer fun.  I was so thrilled to be able to book Banks Helfrich that I just had to write and let the rest of you know how much I like his shows.  Since we have very large crowds for our summer shows, we hired Jiggleman.  His delightfully zany physical humor results in a room full of giggling kids and happy parents.  If I had the funds, I would also hire him to present his new show, Math-u the Counting Cowboy, for younger children ages 2 - 7.  Here's his website --  http://www.whoisbankshelfrich.com/Banks_Helfrich.html if you'd like to learn more about what this talented performer could do at your library.

  • Master the Art of Reading at Leesburg Public Library - Posted Friday, June 26, 2009

Leesburg Public Library's Adult Summer Reading Program is in full swing!  Here's a quote from the library's website and a peek at the entry box:
"Why should the kids have all the fun?  If you are over 18 and have a library card, you can register for our Adult Summer Reading Program and be eligible to win one of several themed gift baskets!  Registration begins June 1st at the First Floor Service Desk.  Prizes will be awarded on July 27th (you need not be present to win). Join us as we MASTER THE ART OF READING this summer! (No artistic talent required.)"
Prizes will be awarded to library patrons, but the library director has purchased other items to give to library employees who participate.

  • Skits from the Boy Scouts - Posted Thursday, June 11, 2009

I was looking for some short, funny skits to use this summer and came upon this one at MacScouter. It sure fits our CSLP theme, doesn't it?

    Artistic Genius

The scene is an art show where judges are inspecting several canvases which are displayed. They comment on the brightness, color, technique, that is used on the different pictures. They select one for the prize and comment additionally on the genius, imagination, and the beauty of the picture. The artist is called up and the winning picture is shown to him. The painter exclaims, "Oh, my goodness, that got in by mistake. That's the canvas that I clean my brushes on.

  • This free teen program sounds great! - Posted Wednesday, June 3, 2009

    Attention public librarians!

YALSA and World Wrestling Entertainment® have joined forces for the SummerSlam Reading Jam, a pilot project with two great prizes: your library could win $1,000 for teen and tween materials for your library's collection and two of your tween and teen library patrons can win a free trip for two to WWE’s SummerSlam pay-per-view event in Los Angeles.

    Here’s how it works:

    · Sign up online! The first 500 libraries to register for the pilot project will receive mini-posters courtesy the WWE. The deadline to sign up for the SummerSlam Reading Jam is June 8 (although registration will close once 500 libraries have signed up for the pilot project).
