First and foremost, Letters About Literature (LAL) is a writing contest for young readers in grades 4 - 12. How has an author's work--novel, nonfiction, poetry--changed your view of the world or yourself? That's the LAL writing challenge. Don't write a book report, we tell our young readers. The author already wrote the book and knows what it is about. What the author does not know is how YOU responded to his or her work. Write about that--your personal reader's response!
Florida Center for the Book in partnership with The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress and Target Stores, invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to enter Letters About Literature, a national reading-writing contest. December 10, 2010 is the entry deadline for the LAL contest.
To enter, readers write a personal letter to an author, living or dead, from any genre--fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, contemporary or classic--explaining how that author's work changed the student's way of thinking about the world or themselves.
