  • Crestview library has patron complaint - Posted Thursday, October 1, 2009

"Earlier this summer, an irate mother phoned the News Bulletin and declared, “Do you know they are allowing kids to check out pornography at the library?”

As it turned out, her son, a young teen, had removed a comic book of Japanese “manga” from the adult section of the Crestview Public Library, concealed it and walked out of the library without checking it out."

Read Brian Huges' article from the Crestview News Bulletin and the numerous posts.

  • The Boys & Girls Club Day for Kids - Posted Thursday, August 27, 2009

The Boys & Girls Club Day for Kids celebration is on September 12, 2009.  BGC Day for Kids is a day set aside each year to celebrate America's children through the gift of meaningful time with a positive adult.  The mission of the Day is about galvanizing national attention on the importance of spending meaningful time with children, something libraries do so well all year long.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America is interested in working with public libraries to participate in this celebration by distributing their Making Memories Family Activity Calendar.  In addition, libraries are encouraged to incorporate programming around BGC Day for Kids.

For programming ideas and the downloadable Making Memories Family Activity Calendar, check the Boys and Girls Clubs Web site at http://www.dayforkids.org/

  • Free Video for basic training to read aloud to children - Posted Thursday, August 20, 2009

Last year staff from Wichita Public Library partnered with Books for Life, a local organization dedicated to providing books and libraries for communities in underdeveloped countries, to create a training video that they could give to communities when they helped install a library.  The purpose of the video was to provide basic training for anyone who is reading aloud to children.  This video is free and is available on the web.  If you are training new staff or volunteers, this is a great way to get them started.  Please take a moment to look at the video here:

Feel free to pass this along to child care providers, teachers and parents.

  • Pancakes Storytime - Posted Tuesday, July 28, 2009

From B. Lawson at Wayne Library, posted to PUBYAC:

My favorite storytime that I MUST do once a year is:

Pancakes - I read Mr. Wolf's Pancakes, bring in a griddle and serve up pancakes!  Then I make frying pans from pie tins (paint stirrers for handles) and give each child a plastic round lid and we have a pancake flipping contest. I say, "1-2-3 FLIP!"  and we all try to flip the pretend pancake. They love this day and beg me to do it constantly!
