  • The Program Room: A Free Biweekly Audio Magazine for YS who Do Children's Programs - Posted Thursday, December 18, 2008

Please share with your librarians.  Below is a description of singer/song writer Monty Harper of Oklahoma, Program Room’s podcasts.  Though he talks about the upcoming summer reading program, Be Creative @ Your Library, the programming ideas, title suggestions and other links, may be used by both school and public librarians, for preschoolers through teens.  Topics cover storytelling, music, theater games, with even more to come.   Enjoy.

The Program Room, a New Resource for Children's Librarians

"The Program Room" is a free biweekly audio magazine for librarians who do children's programming, available as a podcast through iTunes.

Much of the 2008/2009 season will be focused on the Collaborative Summer Library Program theme, "Be Creative @ Your Library." But this resource has plenty to offer for any children's librarian. You'll find it at www.TheProgramRoom.com.

Here's a note from Linda Goff at the Lake County Library System:

Is there any library in Florida that hasn't already hired Banks Helfrich?  Well, just in case you haven't invited him to perform as Jiggleman or the Co-READ-ian or Healthy Herb, be assured you that he is hired every summer here in the Lake County Library System.  I encourage you to email this amazing performer (bankshelfrich@bellsouth.net) and ask him to come enthrall your elementary school aged patrons with his zany antics.  He is guaranteed to crack up even the most stone-faced individual in your audience and he delivers a pro-library message.

  • Free techie help - Posted Wednesday, December 3, 2008

Following is information about the Gates Foundation's MaintainIT Project:

The MaintainIT Project is a three-year project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We gather stories from public libraries on how they support public computers and publish their tips and techniques in Cookbooks and articles, available for FREE on the project web site. The Project works with libraries throughout the U.S. and Canada, sharing stories from the field so librarians can learn from each other.

MaintainIT is a project of TechSoup, (www.techsoup.org) a nonprofit with extensive experience helping other nonprofits use technology effectively. TechSoup works closely with community technology centers (CTCs) that offer access to public computers and have many of the same issues as public libraries. Techsoup Stock (www.techsoup.org/stock) has distributed over 2.5 million donated and discounted products to nonprofits and public libraries, freeing more than $600 million dollars for other uses.

  • Rap up the News - Posted Wednesday, December 3, 2008

CNN and Fox Twenty-somethings Alex Rappaport and Blake Harrison have come up with a great way to get kids interested in current events. Their Week in Rap sums up the latest news using video and clever hip-hop lyrics in a way that’s fun and engaging. It’s a new addition to their Web site, Flocabulary, which uses hip-hop to foster literacy and promote academic success in the classroom.
